6 Mistakes New Businesses Should Avoid in their Digital Marketing Plans

May 17, 2022

It’s 2022, and you’ve finally decided to embrace digital marketing. You’ve made a Facebook and Instagram page, you might probably be thinking “Now What?” We exactly know where you’re coming from! We’ve been on the same boat since social media for businesses became a trend years ago. That’s why we’re here to give you some insights that you can apply as you navigate in this very important platform that you can have today, yet the most complex one.

Social Media just like science evolves continuously. You might think in what way? Just think about it this way, in the field of science what was once considered good is now proven to be bad. It applies to social media, and internet marketing in general.

Okay, let’s talk about it further in this blog.

N°1 Buying followers!

It might be tempting to see other brands that amassed huge numbers of followers. But keep in mind that these brands are already institutions in their respective fields. Millions of followers may look good on your profile, as they say, this aspect is called “vanity metrics”.

But you have to be realistic here, let’s say that as a start-up clothing or food brand, you bought your first 1,000 followers for X amount of dollars from an account that reached out to your DMs and said that they can provide 1,000 followers to you overnight. Tempting right? An instant 1,000 followers?

One thing’s for sure when you buy followers online. They’re not real people! Your posts are not reaching anybody that has the capacity to purchase the product that you’re selling. They’re just a bunch of fictional people operated by a single person who created multiple accounts for you. You’re not fooling anybody here but yourself.

So it is best for you as a business to grow your followers organically. It might take some time, months, or even years. But once you build a good follower base then you’ve established a network of people who are willing to conduct business with you.

N°2 Not engaging with followers

From the name itself, “Social Media” means that it is a network of people with a primary goal which is to socialize. Just like anyone online, in order for you to gain traction and get into the extremely complex algorithms, you have to get into where your target audiences are.

By simply liking your followers’ posts, and leaving friendly remarks, all those small things will build your relationship with your customers. Aside from that, your brand gains exposure! Once you leave a comment in their post, their other friends who might also be a target market of yours will see it! They will get curious, check out your profile then if they like what they see, then you’ve got a new follower!

N°3 Ignoring SEO

Did you know that improving your SEO is the best thing that you can do for your business’s website? It could also be one of the worst things to ignore as you grow your business?

In a nutshell, SEO is a bunch of keywords that people use in order to find solutions to their problems. And what you’re offering is a solution for them for sure. So if you don’t practice proper SEO application to your blogs, product names, product description and the likes, how would they find you?

Added note: Did you know that SEO also applies to social media? The “search button” does wonders! Make sure that your post’s captions contain relevant keywords in order for prospects to see your brand on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms.

N°4 Making everybody your target market

It might be tempting to think that the products or services that you’re selling are good for everybody. But in reality they’re not. Just take in consideration the wide variety of choices of shampoos. There is one for dry hair, one for curly hair, one for dandruff prone scalp and the list goes on.

Each shampoo brand caters to one specific need of a person. Shampoo manufacturers produce items with different variants in order to capture a chunk of market share in the industry. Remember the last time you went to buy a bottle of shampoo? Have you seen a bottle that is labeled “All-in-one Shampoo”? Perhaps not. Or if there is one, you wouldn’t really trust that brand if it’s a shampoo for dry hair, dandruff prone scalp, and for curly hair in a single bottle. You would think that it’s too vague and it might not deliver the desired results that you like.

It also applies to your brand. You might think that generic products like ground coffee, water bottles, and many others can be sold as a generic product that is suitable for everyone? You don’t have an intended market in mind? It’s not really a good idea to do this because your marketing activities would be vague, and being vague will cause mismatch in message delivery thus resulting in failure.

Take some time thinking about what you really want for your brand? Think about who is your target market, their profile and other relevant details first before planning your marketing activities online.

N°5 Unreliable Customer Service

Everybody hates bad service. Who doesn’t right? Think about the last time that you bought a new product from a new brand and you encountered an issue on the product that you just got. Then you encounter very unreliable, unresponsive customer service. Your next tendency is to leave a bad review online. Then boom, your brand just had its first hater. A hater that could have been prevented only if you or your team knows how to take care of customers and address their issues.

You have to put yourself in the shoes of your customer of course. Have you noticed the several complaints of customers towards a certain brand online? With all of their friends and family to see? All of those bad reviews could have been resolved properly only if you communicate well with your customers. Remember that a single bad review can make a customer think twice about buying your products despite several positive ones. Take care of your customers, and they will come back to buy more of what you offer for sure.

N°6 Poor Website Design

They say that content is king. But there’s one thing that business owners overlook whenever they are starting to integrate into the e-commerce world. They commonly forget to create a website with a perfect balance of aesthetically pleasing designs and compelling sales copy.

In this modern world with hundreds of competitors around, aside from selling a product or service with a unique value proposition you must also take in consideration the platform that you’ll use for selling. Without a properly designed website, you are sending off an impression that your brand is not trustworthy. Customers might think that you are not professionals, and experts in the field (if you’re selling service).

That’s why it is a must for you to create a site that is visually pleasing as it is working well. Not everyone in the country has access to fast internet, what if there’s a customer who’s interested in purchasing a product but the site just takes too long to load? They might consider getting an alternative instead of waiting for your site to load which feels a lifetime to them. So you must really consider investing in this.

So now that you know the common mistakes business owners do when it comes to their digital marketing activities you now know how you can dodge a bullet and avoid these mistakes as much as possible.
